With the four-lane development of Highway 400, our area is now becoming a more popular cottage destination.  With that comes larger cottages, cottage rebuilds and bigger boats and all of the issues that come with a more popular, more developed lake.  We're not the first lake in the province to become more popular, and we won't be the last.  Working together, we have always, and will continue to share the lakes and the beautiful lands around them through courtesy, dialogue and consideration for others.  We can and must avoid finger-pointing to select groups or individuals as we cannot stop the building of new cottages, the rebuilding of older cottages or the operation of boats within current regulations.   Both McKellar Lake and Grey Owl Lake are fairly small lakes, so there are some courtesies that go along with the formal boating regulations.

Watch this space for more resources ... as boating traffic appears to be is getting heavier, more information will be posted to enable us all to share the lakes as good neighbours.

  Boat traffic is getting heavier on the lake, and some of the boats are getting bigger and bigger.  It's a good idea for those tubing, water skiing and wake boarding to avoid the narrow channels and stick to the bigger bays.  It's both a courtesy for those with docks and boats and a safety issue for children swimming in the water along the narrower channels.

  In response to several inquiries, the Cottage Association declares that it has not engaged in the the pursuit of speed limits on McKellar Lake or Grey Owl Lake.  Federal and Provincial boating regulations govern these waters.  New speed limit signs recently posted near the north end of McKellar Lake are private signs posted by private citizens and are not endorsed by the McKellar Lakes Home and Cottage Association.

Courtesies

For those who enjoy personal water crafts, tubing, water skiing and wakeboarding, try to avoid repeated runs in front of the same lake front properties.  If possible, keep to the larger bays and away from the narrower channels.

Shore Like speed restrictions (From the Fisheries and Oceans publication entitled Safe Boating Guide)

Shore-line speed restrictions

Certain provinces have adopted a province-wide restriction to limit speed to 10 km/h within 30 metres from shore on all waters within their boundaries, except for:

1.  waterskiing (towing people), where the vessel follows a trajectory perpendicular to the shore; or

2.  in rivers of less than 100m in width, or canals or buoyed channels;

3.  in waters where another speed is prescribed under these or other regulations.

This limit is not posted.

Signs posted anywhere on McKellar Lake and Grey Owl Lake are not endorsed by this Cottage Association.  This Association has not engaged in the pursuit of speed limits on these lakes.
