for 2003!  Another batch of fries were released into McKellar Lake this spring.  This is the third release of fries into the lake over the last six years.  This was a result of the members survey last year which indicated that fish re-stocking was considered very important by many members.

September 2001 - The Ministry of Natural Resources conducted some tests on McKellar Lake.  The lake was one of 10 sampled this year by the Ministry to "objectively assess the status of the walleye resource throughout the region."

Overall, the sampling indicated that fish stocks are healthy in McKellar Lake, including walleye stocks.  There are a series of additional tests being conducted on some of the fish taken during the sampling period.  Once these tests are complete, more information is expected to be released by the Ministry.

If anyone has any questions, the person to contact is Eric McIntyre, Parry Sound Area Fisheries Biologist.  He can be reached at (705) 773-4218.

An additional quantity of fries WERE released in early 2001.  A donation from the McKellar Business Association enabled another release of fries early this year.  A big thanks to the McKellar Business Association!

Older News

The association coordinated a restocking of McKellar Lake in 1999, featuring the creation of a new spawning bed and the delivery of over 1,000,000 new fries into the lake.

The spawning bed was created near the bridge on McKellar Lake Road using round rocks delivered to the site by the Ministry and placed in the water by a number of local volunteers.

The fries are newly hatched fish that are very tiny.  A large number were released into the lake with the understanding that only a small percentage survive.
